esoteric
[ˌesəˈterik]
ADJECTIVE
intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.
I used this word in a book review of Salman Rushdie's "Fury". It's not a word that I use often, and had to look it up to make sure I was using it correctly. Like most of the words that I highlight, it is very easy to work this one into your vocabulary. It probably wouldn't be used often, but is the perfect word when you need to describe something readily understood by only a few. I guess, if you think about it, using it would make you somewhat esoteric yourself!
