I have seen "The Wedding Singer" at least 10 times and laugh and appreciate the jokes every time I rewatch it. It is an homage to my heyday in the early-to-mid 1980s. The lead asshole, Glenn, drives a Delorean and sports a wardrobe that Sonny Crocket would envy. Leading lady Julia's best friend Holly dresses either like Madonna during her crosses and rosaries phase, or decked out in workout gear like Olivia Newton-John wears in her "Physical" video. Mullets are king on leading man Robbie and his bestie Sammy, and when Sammy wears a red leather jacket ala Michael Jackson, Robbie tells him to say hi to his brother Tito (Michael Jackson's actual brother).
Julia drives a lemon yellow, four-door Chevy Citation. Guess what Robbie drives? A freaking AMC Gremlin!! My grandmother had a brown Gremlin.
On a sidenote: can you imagine a car company today making a car that is the color of a healthy bowel movement? Also, as a side note, my first car was a Honda Civil CVCC and I drove that thing like it had freaking wings.
The references are hilarious. A woman states that she can tell which couples are going to make it, like Donald and Ivana, Burt and Loni, and Woody and Mia. Then, Robbie tells his ex to get out of his Van Halen t-shirt before she jinxes the band and they break up. Holly is playing with a Rubik's cube, and tosses it aside, proclaiming that "no one will ever solve that". I laugh at them all.
And the music! I know all of the words to every song in the film. Billy Idol's "White Wedding", Huey Lewis and the News' "Do You Believe in Love?", Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?", Falco's "Der Kommissar", and Nena's "99 Luftballoons". It's a great soundtrack.
And speaking of Billy Idol, he's in the movie! At the end, when Robbie is going to find Julia, Billy Idol is on the same flight. He looks pretty good considering he is playing himself 15 years in the past. I always loved Billy Idol.
There is a Billy Idol fan that comes to the assistance of the "good guys", and it's pretty funny.
All-in-all, this is the perfect movie to watch and revel in all things 1980s, and I think that's why I love it. From Julia's perfect flip-bob hair to Holly's easy reputation with the men (we all had that friend), it proves to be a fun way to relive the past glory days of this now middle-aged woman.
