On this day in 2019 at the age of 88, a powerful voice left this earth.
Toni Morrison was many things. Single mother, editor, author, speaker, award winner. There are at least four documentaries on her life, career, and legacy. Her writing was raw, fearless, true, and beautiful. So beautiful that it is her words etched in stone at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.
Her novels have always been difficult for me to read. Not because they are hard to understand, but because she writes to make it easy to understand. Understand the complexities of being black in this country, both during slavery and today, as well as every moment in between. Her books and poems are mirrors and the reader sees what she must at that moment of reading. That's why her work should be read again and again. The face in the mirror continues to change, grow, and it is with all hope, learn.
You are missed, ma'am.
